Search Engines, New Trend: Quality over Quantity?
The search engines have been the fore-runners in developing internet culture. It is true that search engines (so called information highway) have provided internet users with steady flow of information. But to cope with ever growing internet ads and spams, not to mention the abusive languages even the porns that pour on to popular sites, there are growing concerns and anguish among the net users.

Ever since 'Naver'(a very popular search engine to Koreans) have introduced (end of 2002) a new concept in search engine service called 'Geesig'(intellectual), it has re-woken many internet users with confidences which have brought sudden increase in this sector of market. A huge success to Naver which surpassed market giant 'Yahoo'in merely 6 months since the introduction.

No one could've forecasted success or failure to the market of search engine services in the beginning. However, massive uses to these services have brought the unprecedented success to Yahoo and Empas, which have remained as the top search engines.

'Geesig' service has put huge advertisements on it's site and rather sacrificed providing information
Undoubtedly #1 fore runner in search engine service is Naver. They encompass over 37 million bits of information with 50,000 to 60,000 new contents of information(database) being added on daily basis.
These kinds of strategies have given the Naver, a top leader in this market.

The Geesig search provided all facets of information needs from technical and right down to house hold knowledge. Combining with fast responses to search criteria, it has brought constant flow of online searchers to it's site.

Generating these kinds of new information highway, has brought more and more concerns over its quality rather than just bits of more information. Case in point, online searchers are focusing on more accuracy and quality and not the quantity over the contents provided.

Presently Naver's Geesig service contains countless ads and negative remarks and profanities uploaded by its users, and it has brought down their image somewhat. Especially over the accuracy and source of the search engine reports that are being provided.

On this note, an affiliate from NHN (naver.com & hangame.com) announced its intent to post the accuracy and reliance marks along with identity of its sponsors on their knowledge database. Along with its ability to delete any inappropriate ads and report of any illegal activities by online users, this portal has given us some sense of effort that are being made to combat with the sinking of quality of information furnished to its users.

Search engine service provider answers back: 'cafe search 2.0'
These kinds of issues were dealt with Daum communication's new approach to their search engine.
With their new caf?search 2.0, they've incorporated their strong point, namely communication sector.
In May last year, Daum has successfully launched this new endeavor, and linked their search engine to more than its 6 million caf?members sites along with it's new knowledge project?which was developed by professionals in their fields for the online content providers. And in October, according to 'Korean Clik'(an online survey co.), Daum has increased its search engine visitors from 8% to whapping 24%.

And in November, they opened 'cafe search 2.0 beta service'. This new service has the capability to include not only the information requested by searcher, but also to incorporate any information that are relevant to search request in its 600 million cafe's posts. This in turn provided its user to an instant feedback of relevant information while surfing on any of its cafe's post (bulletin board) sites. This was a win win situation to the net users, in respect to getting the knowledge database created by vast professionals in that particular search. This was their advantage over the regular search engine sites.

And prior to the debut of the cafe search 2.0 service, in just 2 months (from 10/2005, to 1/4/ 2006) time, Daum's PV(page view) was increased to as much as 14.3%. To elaborate on this fact, Daum's communication planner, Park Hyn Chung added that by fully incorporating its search engine database and capabilities, they plan to strategically improve on their corporate goals and just by the mere fact of success and air wave ads of their cafe search 2.0 in just 2 years, have provided relief to once saturated market.

Knowing that massive amount of new information is constantly being added on to the internet, it is merely impossible to filter out, continue to monitor any and all negative contents from the web and internet search engine sites. Therefore we are in need of developing and providing more reliable and accurate information services to internet searchers evermore. This will be the remnants of this industry's ongoing challenges.
