Storage security: lower system performance is biggest obstacle
Storage security issue is becoming increasingly more important to business. Especially with recently added many more restrictions, need for prioritizing data protection is greater. Because most are not in immediate threat, hesitant to make full implementation with some making just partial adjustments to cope with the situation.

For example, one of the biggest Telecom Company in Korea relies on data encryption to manage protecting its major customers. However the encryption is done only on customers' credit card pin number and account numbers rather than over whole data on file. "If we are to encrypt customer¡¯s entire data, system could not handle all the workload. And will make the regular operation impossible. In order to minimize system overload and attain protection with minimal effort, encryption is done only on part of data." explained, company affiliate.

"Most businesses are interested in storage protection but there just aren¡¯t enough demands to drive a market." And ¡°Except for financial sectors, most do not feel the urgency in importing the security system." said, Jay Young-man of Fujitsu Korea.

In other words, most feel the need for the storage security but it¡¯s not a priority. There are growing demand and interests in overall security but not enough in storage protection.

Why? Most customers point out slower system performance as the biggest reason. Also complexity and cost involved plays a big role for postponing and partial system purchases. Beside these, some also feel WORM feature is adequate to fend off attacks.

Seagate, a HDD manufacturer reported its studies on 'Why businesses do not use encryption?' It reports 69% of surveyed blamed lower system performance associated with using storage security, 44% blamed on complex, technical demands required to run encryption for not implementing storage security measures. Other 25% surveyed also blamed on high expense with using encryption technology.

Participants in the survey all have had experienced attacks in past of which, each had damaging amount unto $14 million. In addition, these companies have lost 20 percent of their customers already and about to lose 40 percent more, 5% threatened to take legal actions against them. Running encryption could have avoided all these incidents.

Rising concerns with data protection, related storage security industry is voicing to raise the level of security. Vowing information and data is crucial and vital element to running business. Especially they insist higher level of investment and commitment is necessary to protect highly valuable data, systematic infrastructure management allotment, and control over data accessibility, one that can manage its overall operation.

"Probability of accidental release of information is much higher within the firewall itself versus attacks from the outside. Utilizing storage security measures, even with network or other security measures get compromised, data itself could be protected from the attacks." said, Soon-young Hwang, NetApp Korea to address the need.

Rapid market growth unexpected
However, due to infancy of the market and lack of understanding for the need, the industry does not anticipate any sudden growth within the market. The industry anticipates for growth perhaps by latter part of next year.

Also it's targeting to hit the market with hardware and storage security solution as a packaged bundle. Plan also includes zooming in providing storage security solution to new customers, gain initially targeted sites to eventually expand its market.

"customers have most interest in security within application level" and "will upgrade existing hardware and package deals for the customers, provide DRM and secure login together as one" He followed by "anticipate more demand in storage security market by next year." said, EMC Korea' Min-ah Kim.
