Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a leading provider of telecom systems and mobile phones, will be providing its Mobile WiMAX equipment exclusively to UQ Communications, a Japan-based Mobile WiMAX service provider.
Under the contract signed in April, Samsung will be providing Mobile WiMAX Wave 2 base station systems which include 4G core technologies such as Multi Input Multi Output (MIMO) antenna.
The mobile WiMAX commercial service will begin in Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya from the summer of 2009, according to UQ Communications. It plans to gradually expand the service at a nationwide level .
Geesung Choi, President of Telecom Business in Samsung Electronics, said Samsung welcomes UQ Communications to start up the Mobile WiMAX service.
¡°We will give our full support so that Mobile WiMAX service is provided in Japan successfully and in a timely manner, and we hope that Japanese consumers can enjoy the benefits of a true wireless high-speed Internet.¡±
UQ Communications started its business since March 2008 after it obtained the 2.5 GHz frequency band license for Mobile WiMAX service from Japan¡¯s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in December. UQ Communications was established as a consortium in August 2007, led by six independent companies in Japan such as KDDI, Japan¡¯s second largest mobile service provider, Kyocera, Intel Capital.
